Art - GCSE

What will I study in Art?

The GCSE Art syllabus expects you to study a variety of aspects of visual language. The syllabus is split into two distinct portfolios.

Unit One is based on experiments using a number of different types of art-making that artists have employed historically and currently.

Unit Two is an externally examined assignment set by the exam board based on a one or two word theme. This theme is a starting point to explore ideas that you will interpret in a visual way

Within each Unit you will learn to
  • Research: find out about artists and their intentions and using that understanding to inform art works that we make.
  • Observe: develop your skills through drawing, printing and photography to record what we see for the purpose of understanding shape, form, design, colour, etc.
  • Practice: trying out and honing new skills and techniques across a range of media, including digital technologies, and exploring some of these types of image making.
  • Exhibit: planning your final outcomes and displaying them in an end of course exhibition for examination.

Who will teach me?

David Mullen is a graduate of Camberwell College of Arts with a first class BA (Hons) in Painting. He is practising artist, showing his work in galleries in London. He is new to the Lansdowne Art department this year and brings with him a youthful enthusiasm and love of Fine Art.

Which subjects complement Art?

Elements of Art appear across many subject areas and therefore complement other studies. Studying about Art making and its context will link well with Art History, History, Geography and Sociology. ICT is very visual, and Web Design, for instance, relies on a number of elements from Art knowledge. Creative subjects such as Drama and Music composition share similar creative practise and thinking skills. Art is an essential subject for an understanding of many aspects of our world, especially other cultures and their belief systems.

Which careers can Art and Design lead to?

It is essential for a number of careers as diverse as architecture or film, and any form of design from fashion to aeronautics to everyday household product design. Art GCSE is highly sort after by employers within all creative industries.
