What will I study in GCSE History?
Unit 1: Aspects of International Relations 1918-1939 with Germany 1918-1945. This option looks at three main areas of International Relations between the first and second world wars, namely: Peace Treaties after the First World War, The League of Nations and the Breakdown of Peace in 1930s. The option also looks at life in Germany from 1918-1945, covering the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany.
Unit 2: Changes in British Society 1890-1918. This option looks at social changes and developments, concentrating on the treatment of the poor and welfare reforms, women’s rights and the suffrage movement and life in Britain during the First World War.
Controlled Assessment. This option may change from year-to-year according to the criteria laid down by OCR but the general area of study will be Russia 1894-1921
How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed by two examination papers and the controlled assessment. Unit 1 is examined by a mixture of short answer and essay-type questions and unit 2 by answering questions based on source material. The controlled assessment is a mixture of research and an examination-style essay response done in class.
Do I need to have studied History before?
It is not necessary to have studied History before but an interest in the past is essential.
Who will teach me?
Gary Hunter has a First Class Honours degree in History and has taught GCSE for over 20 years. He is also the College’s Vice-Principal.
Which subjects complement History?
History intersects with many academic disciplines and will lay good foundations for A level subjects such as Government and Politics, English Literature, Sociology, Law and Economics.
What careers can History lead to?
History is a highly respected academic subject which has the added advantage of enabling students to keep their options open. History graduates are very much in demand with the professions: many go on to train as lawyers and accountants or pursue careers in the world of banking and business.
