Our Philosophy of Teaching
...inspiring, challenging and engaging...
Teaching at Lansdowne is a memorable experience for our students. The infectious enthusiasm of our staff shows students that learning matters and that education is exciting, challenging and rewarding. Although tutors set targets which are realistic and challenging, students feel that tutors are on their side, so that targets feel less like an imposition and more an opportunity for development on the road to success. Our philosophy of teaching is to light a fire in students which they will carry for the rest of their lives.
Our College therefore provides an energetic and challenging environment where students are expected to fulfil and usually exceed their own expectations of themselves, based on a rediscovery of the power and joy of learning. Our students can expect teaching of a uniformly high quality which equips students with the self-confidence, knowledge and skills to succeed.
Because Lansdowne offers an academic, exam-focused environment, the abilities of all students are assessed, monitored and provided for. Small class sizes allow constant attention to individual students’ needs – building on strengths and addressing weaknesses. Alongside this, Lansdowne seeks to develop students’ social, cultural and moral awareness, equipping them with transferable skills in preparation for higher education, careers and informed, constructive citizenship.
Our students will receive teaching which is inspiring, challenging and engaging, while never forgetting that students themselves are central to the learning process. Tutors are qualified, experienced and passionate professionals and many are also examiners in their subject. This means that teaching is exam-focused, so that by the end of the course students will have an insider’s view of what examiners expect of them and therefore how to get the highest grades possible.
Lansdowne strongly believes that any student should discover the joy of learning. As a non academically selective College, teaching is differentiated to develop any level of ability and to ensure that all our students are proud of their achievements.
